TV helicopter crashes live on air in LA while filming horror bus collision that killed two

A media helicopter crashed live on air in Los Angeles, California, as it was filming the scene of a bus crash which happened just hours earlier.

At least one person who was in the parking lot where the helicopter crashed has been killed, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters are scrambling to extinguish the fire and recover potential injuries from the scene, helicopter footage from the scene shows.

The aircraft crashed near the StorCal Self Storage facility, colliding with two shipping containers and several vehicles in the area.

Authorities have not confirmed which news organisation the chopper belongs to, but Conan Nolan, KNBC's political reporter, said the station was currently not in contact with its aircraft.

LAFD Captain Branden Silverman described the state of the helicopter as "pretty well destroyed", but did not confirm if there were any fatalities.

He said: "The helicopter itself, it's pretty well destroyed, so we are going to have to go through the rubble and see how many victims there were on board as well as identify the helicopter."

The cause of the crash, reported just before 7pm, remains unclear.

It remains unclear how many other were injured in the helicopter crash, but local media reported seeing no ambulances leaving the scene.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been contacted to assist with the investigation, firefighters said.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is also investigating the horror accident and has deployed its own helicopter to the scene.

The helicopter was near where an SUV collided with a Metro bus in the Chatsworth area, according to Los Angeles Fire Department officials.

Two people were killed and six other people were injured in the initial accident at 5pm, but further circumstances leading up to the collision remains unclear.

One person dead was found dead outside of the bus and the other found thrown outside of the bus.
